Wang Anshi: About Plum Blossoms 王安石：梅花

Wang Anshi (1021 – 1086) was a Chinese economist, statesman, and poet of the Song Dynasty。

His poem "Plum Blossoms" is widely written by calligraphers. In the corner of the courtyard stands a plum tree with only a few branches. The poem does not elaborately describe its attractive blossoms but focus upon its spirit. Braving the hard cold and the icy snow it won’t assert itself publicly nor vie with other kinds of flowers for beauty. Instead, it retains its white and purity like winter snow. Defying the piercing cold, it blossoms in solitude, stealthily giving off a faint perfume. While truly depicting the shape, color and scent of the plum tree, the poet implicity celebrates the pristine and noble quality of plum trees.

Plum Blossoms 
Some plum blossoms in the corner of wall appear; 
They strive to bloom alone in the cold severe.
We know from far that they are not snow white:
For their faint fragrance comes still and quiet.

王安石（1021- 1086）是宋代经济学家、政治家与诗人。他的诗“梅花”为书法家所喜爱。这首小诗意味深远，而语句又十分朴素自然，没有丝毫雕琢的痕迹。在古人吟唱梅花的诗中，有一首相当著名，那就是在作者之前，北宋诗人林逋的《山园小梅》。

　　

尤其是诗中“疏影横斜水清浅，暗香浮动月黄昏”两句，更被赞为咏梅的绝唱。林逋这人一辈子不做官，也不娶妻生子，一个人住在西湖畔孤山山坡上种梅养鹤，过着隐居的生活。所以他的咏梅诗，表现的不过是脱离社会现实自命清高的思想。

　　

作者此诗则不同，他巧妙地借用了林逋的诗句，却能推陈出新。你看他写的梅花，洁白如雪，长在墙角但毫不自卑，远远地散发着清香。诗人通过对梅花不畏严寒的高洁品性的赞赏，用雪喻梅的冰清玉洁，又用“暗香”点出梅胜于雪，说明坚强高洁的人格所具有的伟大的魅力。

　　

作者在北宋极端复杂和艰难的局势下，积极改革，而得不到支持，其孤独心态和艰难处境，与梅花自然有共通的地方。

Su Dongpo: Reminiscing about Antiquity at Red Cliff, To the Tune of Niannu Jiao 苏东坡：念奴娇 赤壁怀古

Su Dongpo (1037 – 1101), was a writer, calligrapher, and artist of the Song Dynasty.  He is regarded as one of the greatest poets in Chinese literary history and his poems are widely written by calligraphers. Here is one of them.

Eastwards the Great River flows,
Waves wash away all the gallant heroes
Through thousands of bygone years!
West of the ancient rampart they call it Red Cliff
Of the Three Kingdoms the battle field,
Remembered by the name of General Zhou.
Jagged rocks pierce the clouds,
Tempestuous waves lash the shore,
Whipping up thousands of layers of snow.
What hosts of heroes once there were
In such a splendid painting of mountain and river!
Imagine young General Zhou in those days,
Having Xiao Qiao, the bride so fair,
Majestic and spirited himself,
With a silk kerchief binding hair,
And a plume fan in hand,
Laughing and jesting,
While Cao Cao’s fleet was destroyed as planned.
Were I to visit the ancient Kingdom,
Sentimental, I would be laughed at,
And my hair turned grey earlier.
Life is but a dream,
Let me pour a libation
To the river with moonlight gleam!

苏东坡：念奴娇 赤壁怀古

苏东坡（1037-1101）是宋代学者、书法家、艺术家，也是历史上有名的诗人。他的诗词广为书法家书写。这里是其中的一首。

大江东去，浪淘尽，千古风流人物。

故垒西边人道是，三国周郎赤壁。
乱石穿空，惊涛拍岸，卷起千堆雪。

江山如画，一时多少豪杰。
遥想公谨当年，小乔初嫁了，雄姿英发 。 

羽扇纶巾谈笑间，强虏灰飞烟灭。
故国神游，多情应笑我，早生华发。

人生如梦，一樽还酹江月。

Mao Zedong: Ode to the Plum Blossom 毛泽东：咏梅

The great leader Mao Zedong of China is also recognised as a great poet and calligrapher. His poems are widely written by calligraphers and 'Ode to the Plum Blossom' is one of such poems.

Ode to the Plum Blossom (1961.12)

Wind and rain escorted Spring's departure,
Flying snow welcome Spring's return.
On the ice-clad rock rising high and sheer
A flower blossom sweet and fair.

Sweet and fair, she craves not Spring for herself alone,
To be the harbinger of Spring she is content.
When the mountain flowers are in full bloom
She will smile mingling in their midst.

中国伟大的领袖也是个公认的大诗人与书法家。很多书法家喜欢书写他的诗词，而‘咏梅’就是其中的一首词。

咏梅

风雨送春归，飞雪迎春到。

已是悬崖百丈冰，犹有花枝俏。

俏也不争春，只把春来报。

待到山花烂漫时，她在丛中笑。
